Since then, an investigation began to get underway, but ended up not revealing any evidence that Ridley was linked with any inside information to place his bets, either on the NFL or any other sport. Although in the first investigation Ridley was not convicted, information was obtained that officials, players and coaches were aware of player involvement in betting.
Given this, a suspension was authorized for the player, who ended up venting on his Twitter that he had bet $1,500, and even said: "I don’t have a gambling problem". However, Ridley commented on his suspension saying that he didn't watch the games while placing his bets, and added, "I know I was wrong But I’m getting 1 year lol."
Meanwhile, Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the National Football League, communicated Ridley as follows:
"There is nothing more fundamental to the NFL's success -- and to the reputation of everyone associated with our league -- than upholding the integrity of the game. This is the responsibility of every player, coach, owner, game official, and anyone else employed in the league.
Your actions put the integrity of the game at risk, threatened to damage public confidence in professional football and potentially undermined the reputations of your fellow players throughout the NFL.
For decades, gambling on NFL games has been considered among the most significant violations of league policy warranting the most substantial sanction."
That said, the NFL has released a report emphasizing that its players cannot participate in gambling as it is extremely prohibited and could result in suspension from playing in the league. Therefore, the NFL noted: "All NFL personnel are prohibited from placing, soliciting or facilitating any bet, whether directly or through a third party, on any NFL game, practice or other event. , score, performance of any individual participant, or any other type of 'proposed bet".
As for other types of sports, the NFL said: "All NFL Personnel are prohibited from placing, soliciting, or facilitating any bet, whether directly or indirectly through a third-party, on any NFL game, practice or other event."
In light of this, the football league said that Ridley's violations are "decided by the Commissioner or his designee on a case-by-case basis" and "constitute conduct detrimental to the League and will subject the involved Club and/or person(s) to appropriate disciplinary action by the Commissioner". The NFL also cited "severe penalties, up to and including a fine, termination of employment and/or banishment from the NFL for life."
It is worth mentioning that Josh Shaw had also been suspended from playing by the Arizona Cardinals. Shaw's suspension came after the NFL learned that the athlete placed bets while injured on the team's reserve.
